Teaching Professor and Associate Department Head for Undergraduate Affairs, Engineering and Public Policy
Deanna Matthews is a teaching professor and the associate department head for undergraduate affairs in the Department of Engineering and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University.
As a teaching professor, she educates students on the complexity of real-world problems related to technology, policy, and society, and the possibilities for how their professional and personal lives could make a difference in our future. She teaches courses in engineering, science and public policy, project management and professional skills, and analysis methods. She advises undergraduate and graduate students in their decisions about courses, extracurriculars, research, summer experiences, and career pathways.
As associate department head, she manages the undergraduate and graduate educational programs administrative responsibilities for the department, oversees curricular development in the department and college, facilitates faculty-student interactions, and supports alumni relationships.
She is a member of the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE), Society of Women Engineers (SWE), and the Pittsburgh ARCS Chapter. She has received the College of Engineering's Benjamin Richard Teare Teaching Award, Outstanding Service Award, and Dean’s Early Career Fellowship, and is a College of Engineering Leadership Fellow. She was previously a Research Associate in the CMU Eberly Center for Teaching Excellence and with the CMU Green Design Institute. She has industry experience in consulting and at IBM in environmental management, environmentally focused product design, and life cycle assessment. She earned a BS from Duke University and MS and Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University, all in civil engineering.
