Visit Day contacts

Our in-person departmental Visit Day will take place on Friday, March 20, beginning at 10 AM in the EPP conference room, located in Wean Hall, Room 4110, on the Carnegie Mellon Campus. We will also be broadcasting the event via Zoom for those who are unable to attend in person.

For those attending in person, we have arranged a series of social events on Thursday through Saturday to give you a chance to meet with our current students and faculty. These events include a Thursday evening informal dinner with students, a Friday evening social event with students (currently being planned), and a Saturday morning, one-hour “livability” Molly’s Trolley tour of the neighborhoods near campus, concluding with lunch with students.

Lodging

For those who need lodging, we have reserved a block of rooms at the Hilton Garden Inn - Pittsburgh University Place for Thursday and Friday nights. We will cover the cost of the room, tax, and parking (if applicable). You will need to register to reserve a hotel room. The deadline to reserve a hotel room is February 24. Debbie Kuntz and/or Julie Mull will send you a hotel and events reservation link. Prior to your arrival, Debbie will send you a hotel confirmation number. Transportation

There are several options to get to the hotel (and CMU campus) from the Pittsburgh airport, provided here:

From the Pittsburgh International Airport to the Hilton Garden Inn - University Place

28X Airport Flyer

Pittsburgh Port Authority offers a very reliable and inexpensive bus service that will bring you into the Oakland area. Both CMU and the Hilton Garden Inn are located in the Oakland neighborhood. The bus is the 28X Airport Flyer, costs $2.75, and is available at the Ground Transportation area in the Pittsburgh Airport. No reservations are needed. It begins operating at 4:30am and ends at midnight. A bus departs the airport approximately every 30 minutes.

Exact change is required, credit cards are not accepted, and drivers do not carry cash.

The 28X will make a number of stops in the Oakland area. For the Hilton Garden Inn, you will want to use the Forbes Avenue and McKee Place stop.

If you are coming to CMU directly from the airport, the 28X will stop at the CMU campus on the corner of Forbes Avenue and Morewood Avenue. Depending on the time of day and due to the number of stops along the way, it may take approximately 1.5 hours to arrive at CMU from the airport.

Uber and Lyft

Uber and Lyft are available in our area and are great and often inexpensive options for getting to and from your destination.

To CMU's campus from the hotel

The hotel is located a mile away from CMU's campus, approximately a 20-minute walk.

If you have a car and wish to drive to campus, contact Debbie or Vicki several days ahead of time to arrange parking at the campus garage.

Additional information

Check the weather forecast. March in Pittsburgh can be a mixed bag, so please dress comfortably and appropriately!

Finally – enjoy your visit!  While Friday will be a formal day of pre-arranged meetings and sessions, we have built in social events that we hope will give you a chance to relax and get a feel for Pittsburgh and the surrounding areas. Pittsburgh offers a lot of great amenities – cultural diversity, excellent eateries, a world-class symphony, opera, ballet, art & history museums, modern dance, jazz, professional sports, hiking, biking, and a low cost of living. There is a reason why Pittsburgh has been named as one of the “best places to live” in the US!
